The Golden Hour – Afghanistan

February 2010 As the latest Nato-Afghan push against the Taliban gets underway, the spotlight is turned onto the young medical teams struggling to save lives and keep up morale in remote outposts. Two-thirds of those serving in Afghanistan were still in school when the US declared war on the Taliban eight years ago. A young surgeon tells jokes as he struggles to stitch up a bleeding wound. There’s a familiarity with the war given away by typical medics black humour and irreverence. This isnt my first rodeo, Ive done this before. However, not far beneath the surface of the jokes lies an increasing bewilderment about the purpose of this war. In terms of what were doing here now, its not clear to me that we have an overall end point that makes sense. When injured patients arrive at this remote field hospital, there is a golden hour in which to save their lives. After that time, their chances are slim. The group are under immense emotional and physical stress, and the latest surge by US and British troops has them worried. They say theyre bracing themselves for the bloody consequences, but it is clear from this confronting report that their gung-ho attitude has its limits. @CouldBawake Well maintaining a firm position beats simply letting them have their way in either case. This is as close to a solution as we are going to get.

  3. Kanadah says:

    Afghans not Afghanistani.

“Fascism believes that the nation is an organic community that requires strong leasdership, colective identity and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong.Fascism identifies violence and war as actions that creates national regeneration, spirit and vitality.” This quotation reminds me so much about the US policy.

  5. meghmuktoakash says:

Why they dont make any documentry on how the afghanistani peoples are living their life. US army spending all the govt. money on the war while afghanistani people spending their blood.

  6. waterse says:

i love how we are still at war while this country is in debt.

  7. CouldBawake says:

I guess we invade there country and kill them all then lol..I have No Alternative because there’s no real solution that’s my point..

  8. touryibrah says:

why are we have to be the police of the world? why should we be paying billions of our tax money to these???? pakistan, egypt, israel, and so on…
let us focus on our own hometown….
i am sorry, we have to think….

  9. caesiume says:

I am such a pussy…my eyes started watering at around 21:00

  10. Futuregohan14 says:

@CouldBawake Besides that, what is your alternative anyway? Withdraw and just leave it alone? Would you like to “talk” to the Taliban?
Even Obama (generally unsupportive of unnecessary conflicts and more willing to engage in discussion with rogue leaders than any president we’ve had for quite some time) realizes that this is unfeasible, hence his recent surge.
    What is your alternative?

  11. Futuregohan14 says:

@CouldBawake We are not the Soviets. The Soviet Union was in a far more tenuous position than we are today. Economical, social and political turmoil hit a head towards the end of their conflict and tore the Union apart. Not only did they sustain more casualties than we have thus far, they were in a much less stable position politically, socially and economically.
People should not use the Soviet comparison so liberally. We’re in a much better position to sustain a conflict than they were.

Here is a new video 9/11. (A FireFighter for 911 Truth Finally) I know you would rather believe someone that wasnt even there over people who were. They didnt even do an investigation and you take their story to be the truth brainwashed you are. 5000 innocent American soldiers were killed for the lie in Iraq. Dont tell me they care about American lives when we never left even after learning it was a lie.

  13. CouldBawake says:

How can our government keep paying on this war if we already owe Billions??There is no end to this like you said its been going on for years..Al-Qaeda did the 9/11 attacks not the Taliban or so we are told…lets be realistic though nobody here ever talked to any of these people who been hating us for years..Like i already said we will have to withdraw just like the soviets…we dont have the funds and war cost money…

  14. Futuregohan14 says:

@CouldBawake Uh yeah man, they are planning attacks on US soil from their strongholds. That is what they’ve been doing this entire time. Its what led to 9/11 and several other attacks worldwide.

And you notion that our leaving will somehow alleviate their hate is false. Do you think that the bad blood started just now?
The hatred goes deeper than that. Leaving will not cause less hate, it will simply embolden them. This is not a dubious war like Iraq-we cant leave the Taliban that easily.

  16. Abdsadat2007 says:

when this kiling is going to be over. already half of the population of afghanistan is dead in russian war. leave the rest in peace . because no body like the people who creates the weapon and tanks no body talks about peace . truth is power and money

  17. MrBuckley123 says:

    peace on earth

  18. setsejuk says:

  20. D1lk says:

RonPaulRevolution4u: I accept your rebuke for my generalization involving ALL Americans.

I am distressed at the decline of a civilization that once gave so much to the world.

Now, like Rome, it has abused its natural resources; so it expands abroad to replace them; it must militarize to do this, so is forced deeper into debt.

Not just politicians but MILLIONS of Americans make modest livelihoods from this self-destructive process. And MILLIONS more accept the process as inevitable.

  21. RonPaulRevolution4u says:

    To D1lk

Relax. MANY of us here don’t like any of this any more than you do (a majority here don’t support the wars you make it sound like we all support).

Aim you venom at the politicians who make these decisions like Bush & Obama and all their endless wars, not at the American people. Many of us are doing are best to protest to stop this type of foreign policy.

You’re Canadian (Canada is our dearly loved neighbor), so you should know better than to blanketly indict all of us like that.

  22. officerdown says:

It’s good to see a documentary thats not being used as propaganda, it’s a shame where involved in this war and it seems governments like the British need to better equip our troops to even stand a chance of winning. Where fighting an invisible enemy not an army with uniforms and morals.

  23. pantagana123 says:

    God bless those medics…

  24. basslightning1 says:

very well done documentary,, you never see anything close to this on the skewed news programs,,,, no one talks about it,,,,, this is why the government gets away with doin shit the american people don’t agree with!!!!!

  25. ballsauce666 says:

Poor Afghanis with no medical help.
